Indigenous Tree Planting Project, Masai Mara
The human population is increasing around the Mara and so too is the demand for firewood; this exerts great pressure on the natural forests and especially the indigenous tree species. Working together with Friends of Conservation and Sanctuary Olonana Camp, a special tree planting project was started and an area was set aside for a tree nursery at Sanctuary Olonana Camp in the Masai Mara.
Plant a Tree with A&K
This tree planting initiative invites guests to purchase and plant an indigenous tree as a way to personally aid in reforestation efforts in the area. The caretaker at the nursery prepares an area and assists guests as they plant the tree. The tree is then tagged with their name so that guests can return to revisit ‘their tree’ in the future. A certificate is issued to recognise this contribution in helping curb deforestation in the Mara. For further information or if you would like to include such a conservation activity in your safari itinerary, please contact A&K Kenya.

Nyumbani Centre, Kitui
Nyumbani, which is Swahili for “home”, provides comprehensive care for HIV positive orphans in Kenya. The home was founded by Father D’Agostino, a priest who was also a physician, with the aim to care for abandoned children who inherited the HIV virus from their mothers. Nyumbani creates a safe and secure environment for the children, emphasising the importance of family-style living and providing nutritional, medical, psychosocial, academic and spiritual care to more than 100 children.

The home relies on a strong network of friends and donors to continue its good work. A&K Philanthropy has assisted with general funding at Nyumbani Village, a second settlement for HIV positive orphans that is being built in Kitui, Kenya. There is still work to be done, but when complete the village will function as a complete conservation eco-village, employing organic farming, agro-forestry, biodiesel fuel production and water conservation practices. If your clients would like to meet the dedicated staff who look after the children and spend time playing, reading or just chatting with these amazing children, please contact us for more information on including such a visit in a Kenya itinerary.
